Since When Are Donuts and Hot Dogs 'Fresh Foods'?

by By Dr. Karen Shaw Becker
Pets need unadulterated, fresh, whole foods that are moisture dense. They do not need breakfast pastries, processed meats, sandwiches, fast food or mac and cheese. I also don't recommend processed toppers or mix-ins for the same reasons I don't recommend processed pet food.
So in a nutshell, the best foods to add to your pet's bowl come from the refrigerator, not the pantry. Foods that are considered "perishable" are also considered "fresh" (which means they rot or spoil in a short period of time if not kept cool). My take away message about toppers is don't add anything to your pet's bowl of shelf-stable pet food that doesn't come from the refrigerator.

Review of Pet Food in 2017

The good and bad of pet food during 2017.
2017 got off to a heartbreaking start with the death of a dog linked to euthanized animal meat in Evanger’s Pet Food. It was New Year’s Eve 2016 when Talula and four other dogs became ill and spent the night in an Emergency Veterinary Clinic. Talula didn’t survive.
2017 could have turned out very differently for many pet families had this family not taken immediate action. The family suspected the pet food was the cause, and had a necropsy performed on Talula’s body. The veterinarian performing the necropsy was attentive and noticed the stomach contents looked strange. His attention to detail resulted in testing of the stomach contents for pentobarbital – which ultimately led to the Evanger’s pet food recall and an FDA investigation (still ongoing at year’s end). Turning their grief into something positive, Talula’s family has initiated an educational program for other pet parents. They designed this poster to help educate pet owners to report every suspect pet food related illness (please share).

Remarkable New Pet Food Trend of the Future ?

  • By Dr. Karen Shaw Becker
  • The raw pet food market is poised for continued growth, which is great news for pet parents and the dogs and cats they love
  • Raw pet food sales more than tripled from 2012 to 2016
  • Raw diets are meeting consumer demand for unprocessed pet foods without preservatives and unnecessary non-nutritious ingredients
  • The ideal choice for optimal nutrition for dogs and cats is a homemade, nutritionally balanced raw diet; alternatively, you can purchase nutritionally balanced prepared frozen, freeze-dried or dehydrated raw diets

Adding Raw Eggs to Dog Food

I feed my dogs occasionally about a tea spoon of raw egg to their menu. I also add in the mornings 2 small eggs to two pounds of ground meat.
Sometimes I add scrambled eggs, or hard boiled eggs , and everything is eagerly consumed.
The key here, as always, is : everything in moderation.

Bottom Line: Raw egg whites contain the protein avidin, which may block absorption of biotin, a water-soluble B-vitamin. However, it's unlikely to cause deficiency unless you eat a lot of raw eggs.
