Xylitol, Toxicity of sugarless Gum, Candy for Papillon, Dogs

I recently heard about a Papillon dog, who  ate one piece of sugarless gum(Trident), which fell out of the owner's by accident. By next morning the dog was very sick. He was vomiting without stopping. The vet he was immediately brought to had no doubt, that it was the sugarless gum, and he had at that point little hope, that the Papillon would survive.
I do not know yet, or if I will, about the outcome, and I pray for his survival, but I also would like to make everyone very aware of the fact , that there are out there:

  • sugar-free gums

  • candies
  •  toothpastes
  •  mouthwashes
  • baked goods which contain xylitol ,a 5 carbon sugar alcohol used in sweeteners)

Any dog ingesting xylitol, the chances are high, that it may cause

  • vomiting
  • loss of coordination
  • seizures
  • and last: liver failure
